Things to do in Altos de Chavón

Altos de Chavón looks like a centuries-old Mediterranean village perched above the Chavón river, but it was built in the 1970s, with its open-air amphitheatre opening in 1982 with a Frank Sinatra concert. Treat it as a cobblestoned arts village and cultural site, not as historic ruins: cut-stone buildings house galleries, workshops and craft shops around a small church and a plaza. It sits close to La Romana, a short drive rather than a separate day trip on its own, and most visitors combine it with a few hours here rather than a full day, since the village covers only a handful of streets.
