Things to do in Higuey

Higuey is a working Dominican town, not a beach resort, and it has no coastline of its own: the sand starts back in Bavaro, Cap Cana and Uvero Alto.

Most visitors see it only as a detour, usually combined with an excursion heading north or inland, to view the Basilica of Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia, the country's national pilgrimage site, busiest around its feast day on 21 January.

Outside the basilica, Higuey has little built for tourists, so treat it as a stop of an hour or two rather than a destination, and expect a longer road transfer than the drive between the resort sectors themselves.
