5 to 3 hours by road from Punta Cana hotels, not one hour, so this only works as a full-day outing or as part of a longer stay. The reward is real: a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, with the Catedral Primada de America and the Alcazar de Colon among its landmark buildings.
Santo Domingo also has its own airport, Las Americas (SDQ), separate from Punta Cana International (PUJ), which is worth knowing if you would rather fly one way than sit through two road transfers in a single day.
